Heartworms are parasites found in mammals, especially dogs, cats, and ferrets but also affects wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions, and even human beings. Foot-long worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of those affected and cause a myriad of problems. Lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in the body occur from heartworms. The most severe cases cause death.
